Teacher Training Celta
Britannia is a Cambridge teacher training centre, offering DELTA, and CELTA at least once a year. CELTA and DELTA are Cambridge qualifications for English teachers who seek international certification.
CELTA (originally Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment , part of the University of Cambridge, is the best known and most widely recognized initial ELT qualification. Although the CELTA course is designed for those with no previous experience, it is also suitable for those who have been teaching for some time but have no formal training or qualification. It aims at giving candidates a firm foundation in all areas of modern ELT which they can then build on through further professional development.
The Britannia CELTA is offered:
- Part-time, usually on Fridays, starting in February/March or July/August, for 4 months
- Intensive, usually 4 weeks, in January or July.
Although the Britannia CELTA administration uses technology with an online page and interaction, Britannia does not offer CELTA online.

There are no plans for an intensive CELTA at the moment.
The investment is currently of R$ 4.950,00 payable in up to 6 instalments (invoice) or up to 8 instalments (credit card) for the part-time course. The course fee excludes the Cambridge Certification fee, payable on week 2 of the course, regardless if it is part-time or intensive. There is an extra fee of R$ 70,00 for the use of printing facilities and full broad-band or wireless access.
The Britannia Celta Course is made up of:
- Input sessions on language awareness (analyzing language from the learners´ perspective) and methodology with a strong emphasis on practical teaching skills.
- Assessed Teaching Practice (TP) in groups of 5/6 trainees, with real students, followed by feedback sessions with the TP group and the tutor.
- 4 written assignments on practical issues related to the classroom.
Other features of the course:
- Observation of experienced teachers
- Tutorials throughout the course to monitor progress
- Individualized support when necessary
All courses are assessed by an external moderator appointed by the University of Cambridge to ensure quality control.
There is no final examination: assessment is based on continuous evaluation from week to week. The main focus is on practical teaching ability but you will also be assessed on your written assignments and professional development which includes punctuality, record-keeping, your relationship with students and colleagues.
The Celta is a unique experience because it is essentially hands-on. It puts your teaching skills on focus, so you are a hundred per cent aware of your strengths and weaknesses, which greatly improves your professional development. This is achieved through deep interaction between colleagues and mentors, through a format you will not find anywhere else.
I have been an English teacher for 13 years now and although the CELTA is meant to be an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience, it has been a watershed in my professional life. It is true that the course meant a lot of work but you know what they say: “No pain, no gain”. In my case, I have gained a lot.
I took the part time CELTA course in March 2010. I had only been in Brazil for two months and had previously finished a Masters in Education in the United States. The course was much more than I expected. I learned about lesson structure, grammar, classroom culture and building context. My tutors were diverse and allowed me to see different teaching styles. I would highly recommend the CELTA course at Britannia as it has and continues to serve me well with my teaching.
At first, I thought of CELTA as a certificate that would open doors to other courses in Brazil as well as in other countries. I had made up my mind to take it, mainly to improve my CV. What I couldn`t imagine was the change it would make in the way I teach, clearly seen even when I use methods different from the communicative approach. I didn`t only learn new techniques , I also learned a new point of view about what teaching a foreign language might be. It was a really rewarding experience, and that has been useful in every class I teach nowadays.
